The Hidden Job Market in the Beauty Industry

The Hidden Job Market in the Beauty IndustryThe Hidden Job Market in the Beauty Industry When you walk into your favorite department store - lets say Bloomingdales - did you know that most of the employees on the sales floor arent actually employed by the store? The associates clad in all black attire or white lab coats are often actually freelancers hired directly by beauty brands themselves. Why? Well, in any industry, one of the hardest tasks is hiring the right candidate . Many employers would rather hire from within, or through their personal network, to avoid the onerous task of open application review. In retail, the task of vetting for great employees is very difficult, due to the sheer size of the industry and fluctuating staffing needs. It can be challenging to place the right person in the right store at the right time - but as we move into the gig economy , there lies a great opportunity to take advantage of the growth in freelance talent. With hundre ds of thousands of retail-based positions in the US alone, from beauty advisors and counter managers to brand account executives and education consultants , its no surprise that this market is complicated to navigate. Who are behauptung people and where do we find them? The freelance retail talent market is largely hidden. As with any retail industry, beauty talent serves to provide an in-person experience, with hopes of inspiring the customer to purchase a product and build a relationship with the brand. Beauty, in particular, is all about teaching consumers about what products do, how to use them, and why your brand is the best. Freelance talent serves to educate, as well as play the role of a liaison between the brand and the customer. Some freelancers earn their income through both a traditional job and a side-hustle something generally geared towards a personal passion. Others freelance full-time, putting all of their efforts into becoming a professional in their passi ons. Most beauty professionals start out because of a passion for the creative . Starting with yourself as your first customer, as your love for beauty grows, you begin to share your passion with others. The key to future success lies in sharing artistry tips and connecting with each other - often selling relationships and experiences more than the products themselves. As your skills and relationships develop, so does your career. Its estimated that 34 percent of the American workforce is freelancing thats over 50 million people. So why are all of behauptung people making the change from traditional employment? Freelancers have more power over their schedules, more control over their career growth, and a greater ability to balance personal interests - like traveling or starting a family. The four most popular reasons people freelance are freedom, flexibility, skill-building , and the pursuit of a passion.Companies hire freelancers for many reasons - for one, the talent helps in providing a better experience for customers. In an increasingly online world, its vital for brands to create in-store experiences that draw in consumers to make purchases 92 percent of global consumers trust earned media, like word-of-mouth recommendations, more than traditional advertisements. Through the use of social media, in-store talent can maintain relationships made on the floor, while also building their careers through exposure and bringing in new clients who find them online. And if you needed more reasons to believe in the true potential behind these opportunities, some of the biggest names in beauty started out on the sales floor. Before launching her empire and becoming a household name, Bobbi Brown worked for seven years as a freelance artist - achieving her big break when she styled Naomi Campbells face for her American Vogue cover debut. Brown remains a loyal supporter of freelance talent, citing the flexibility and wide variety of experiences held by freelan cers as two of the major reasons she considers them exceptional employees. The bottom line? People become freelancers and people hire freelancers for the same reasons. So if youre seeking a job that offers freedom, flexibility, and the chance to both learn new skills and exercise your passion, consider this hot field .Glenn Laumeister is an experienced technology leader who is currently the CEO of AllWork , a platform for brands and retailers to find, manage and pay retail talent.

Great Workplaces Do the Laundry First

Great Workplaces Do the Laundry FirstGreat Workplaces Do the Laundry FirstGreat Workplaces Do the Laundry First Robin, Ph.D., and Michael Burchell , Ed.D., co-authors of No Excuses How You Can Turn Any Workplace into a Great One (Jossey-Bass, 2013)There is an old Zen saying, after enlightenment, the laundry which beautifully captures the idea that one can never let go of the minutia that helped enable the enlightened state in the first place. All of us have life management tasks such as purchasing groceries, paying bills and doing laundry that are necessary to organize our life and that help facilitate other higher bestellung things such as engaging in meaningful work or connecting with loved ones. The same is true in business. We need to get the basics right and do the organizational laundry.Take Care of the Laundry FirstOur view of organizational laundry is having a clearly articulated mission and geistesbild, company values that guide the organization, an effective strategy, a produ ctive management system, and a company culturethat supports all of this.We too often find, however, organizations operating without reference to the basics. Quickly, the imagination becomes a slogan, the business plan becomes a door stop, and the values are a plaque on the wall.Conversely, in great workplaces, we find that behind their financial success lies a strong sense of identity that helped create such excellence in the first place.Through our experience, it has become clear that only in addressing these areas of organizational laundry can you really leverage the power and opportunity that comes from creating and sustaining a great workplace. But as mundane as the laundry sounds, it can be energizing. As long as your effort helps to reinforce the sense of organizational identity, it contributes to a great workplace and buffers against the inertia of excuses. The Necessity of Mission, Vision and ValuesAt W. L. Gore Associates, they talk about their one objective which is to make money and have fun. As a business, they understand that they need to make money or they wont have a business for long.On the other hand, they also appreciate that having fun together as they accomplish their goals builds an enduring business for the long term. Both need to be in balance, and at Gore, they work diligently in meeting their one objective. And as a result, Gore is a very solid business. No matter what form they take, an adage such as that at W. L. Gore and Associates or a more formal statement, best companies have a clearmission, vision, and values first and foremost.Second, they have a well-crafted strategy or plan for achieving their vision and goals.Third, they have created the right managementstructure to align their internal resources in service of that vision. And fourth, they have developed a strong, sustainable high-trust workplace culture that enables its employees to deliver on that vision. These four points are summed up well by Rajeev Peshawaria in Brains, Bon es, and Nerves The Only Three Things an Enterprise Leader Should Focus On, an online publication by 800-ceo-read (2011). In it, he explains that there are a vital few things an enterprise leader should focus on. He offers,The key is to control and shape the three most important levers of sustainable business growththe Brains, the Bones, and the Nerves. The brains of a business are its vision and strategy, and here the enterprise leader must shape and set direction. The bones are the organizational architecture, and here the enterprise leader must design the organization in order to execute the strategy. Tips for Writing a Technical Feasibility Study

Tips for Writing a Technical Feasibility StudyTips for Writing a Technical Feasibility StudyA technicalfeasibilitystudy assesses the details of how you intend to deliver a product or service to customers. Thinkmaterials, labor, transportation, where your business will be located, and the technology that will be necessary to bring all this together. Itsthe logistical or tactical plan ofhowyour business will produce, store, deliver, and track its products or services. A technicalfeasibilitystudy is an excellent tool for both troubleshooting and long-term planning. It can serve as a flowchart of how your products and services evolve and move through your business to physically reach your market. Begin- or End- With an Executive Summary The word summary is key here. Highlight the key points of each section youll include in your technical feasibility study. You can do this in advance to provide yourself with a sort of guideline or skeleton to follow as you prepare your study. It is of ten easier and more concise to write it after youve finished, so you have the information you want to include right in front of you. In either case, the summary should appear at the beginning of your technical feasibility study. Preparean Outline Even if you decide to write your executive summary last, you can begin with an outline that will serve a similar purpose in guiding you through the remainder of the study. The order in whichyou present technical information isnt as important as making koranvers you have all the components in distributions-mix to show how you can run your business. You donthave to include specific financial information in the technical portion of yourfeasibilitystudy. However, all information in this component should sttze financial datarepresented elsewhere. Basic areas youll want to cover include materials, labor, transportation or shipping, physical location, and technology. Be sure to include a thorough description of the services or products youll b e offering. How will your business benefit consumers? Give investors a reason to choose you over your competitors. Calculate Material Requirements List the materials youll require to produce a product or service. This section is where youll indicate where youll get those materials. Include information such as whether volume discounts will be available as your business grows or if you plan to manufacture your parts at some point in time. Include what parts and supplies youll need to produce a product, including things like glue and nails. Mention all materials that will be involved in producing or manufacturing what youre selling. You dont have to include actualfinancial data in this portion of the study either. However, financial data that supports your narrative assessment should be included as an attachment in a separate spreadsheet. CalculateLabor Requirements You cantrun a business, offer services, ormanufacturer productswithout the help of others and that help will cost you. Even if you start your business as its only employee, youll have to add to your labor schwimmbecken at some point if you plan to grow. In fruchtwein cases, labor will be one of your biggest small business expenses, if not the biggest. List the number and types of employees you need to run your business now and that you might have to employ in the future as your business grows. You can break labor into categories if necessary, such as senior-level management, office, and clerical support, production or distribution staff, professional staff including lawyers, accountants, engineers, and marketing, and fulfillment employees- those in the mailroom or shipping department. If you plan to outsourceorder fulfillment, fundraising, or other aspects of your companys business, be sure to list what functions youre targeting and to whom youll send these tasks. Transportation and Shipping Requirements How will you transport items if you must send them from one place to another? Smaller items can be shipped via local carriers, DHL, or USPS, but heavy orbulkitems must be transported via a freight or trucking company. If youreshipping perishable items, youll need special overnight handling. You might also need special permits to ship certain items, and nonprofit organizations should consider applying for discounted postal rates. These are all things that affect the how of moving your goods from one place to another. If you offer services, how will trainers, educators, consultants, andsales personnel get to customers and clients? You will need a licensed distributor or pharmacy to ship on your behalf if you offer a product thatsgoverned by state or federal law such as medications or prescription medical supplies, Calculate Marketing Requirements How will you reach consumers? It is a crucial consideration because your business will fail without them. Its something investors will be keen to know. Go beyond simple advertising plans, although this is important, too. E xactly what type of advertising campaign do you plan to launch? Will you lean more heavily on print media or other options and what consumers will you target? Explain why they would want to buy from you rather than any of your competitors. The Physical Location of Your Business Where you run your business will have an effect on your success. If yourestarting in ahome-based office, determine when and if youll need a brick and mortar office at some point in the future- office spaceoutside your home. Will you eventually need warehouse facilities, your factory, or your trucking facility? Will you require a retail storefront or any other purchased or rented facilities to conduct your business? Discuss the pros and cons of where these facilities will be located in the physical location component of your feasibility study.Should they be in one central location or across state lines? Do you need special parking considerations for customers or trucks? Do you have to be near other faciliti es such as an airport, a commerce center, or a shopping mall? Technology Requirements to Run Your Business Every business needs at least some kind of technology to operate. The technology component of yourfeasibilitystudy should include discussionsabout telephone answering systems, computer hardware and software, and inventory management. Dont overlook items like cash registers and potentially the ability to accept credit cards and process checks. You might need special devices to accommodate the disabled, or teleconferencing equipment and facilities. Cellphones and PDAs are almost a must for most businesses, and you might need alarm or camerasystems and manufacturing equipment as well. Include Target Dates Tell investors when you plan to do what to bring your concept to fruition. Dont neglect to mention the small steps. Cover it all, from initial organizational meetings to when youll purchase equipment or facilities and when and how youll open your doors for business. Be re asonable. You dont want to promise that youll perform by a miraculous deadline then fail to do so. Support Your Financial Information Dontmake the mistake of trying to entice investors with your staggering growth projections and a potential return on their investment. Theres always an increase in expenses with an increase inrevenue. Dont rely strictly onfeasibilitystudy conclusions to impressan investor. An experienced investor or lending institution will read your entire report and come to their conclusions. Its therefore critical that the technical and financial data in your study reconcile. If other parts of yourfeasibilitystudy show growth, youll also have to project labor and other costs and the technical ability to support that growth. The technical component should serve as the written explanation of your financial data because it offers you a place to include detailed information as to why an expense has been projected high or low. You can explain why its even necessary. It demonstrates to potential investors and lenders- and in some cases, potential clients- that youve thought about the long-termneeds your business will have as it grows. Summary of the TechnicalFeasibilityStudy Be sure to include all the technical requirements of your business from production to customer receipt. This information will help investors know more about the operations of your business. Having a great idea for a product or business isntenough- you have to show how you can make money from it. The technicalfeasibilitystudy addresses the physical and logistical mechanics of it, and how youll be able to get something into theproduct and back out the door to customers.

Why you should allow yourself to get bored more often

Why you should allow yourself to get bored more often Why you should allow yourself to get bored more often I couldn’t remember the last time I was bored. It was two years ago. I had just woken up and reached over to my bed stand to grab my phone so I can take my morning dose of digital notifications. As I was about to start scrolling through my various feeds, I had an epiphany.I couldn’t remember the last time I was bored.Along with my VHS player and Bon Jovi cassettes, boredom had become a relic of the past. Gone were the days when I would lie awake in bed in the morning, bored out of my mind, and daydream for a while before deciding to immerse myself into reality. I’d no longer twiddle my thumbs while waiting for a haircut or strike up a conversation with a stranger waiting in line at a coffee shop.I know I’m not alone here. We fill - no stuff - every moment of our day with activity. We switch from one form of social media to the next, check our email, catch up on the news- all within a span of twenty minutes. We prefer the certainty of these distractions over the uncertainty o f boredom (I don’t know what to do with myself, and I’d rather not find out).During rare moments of tranquility, we feel almost guilty. As notifications scream their 100-decibel sirens for attention, we feel compelled to sneak a peek at them so we don’t miss out. Rather than being proactive, we spend most of our days - and our lives - playing defense against the onslaught of notifications and rapid-fire breaking news. Our responses stoke, rather than put out, the fire. Each email we send generates even more emails. Each Facebook message and tweet gives us a reason to return. It’s a Sisyphean torture, endlessly rolling a boulder up an impossible hill. All this churn feels productive, but it’s not. We’re hamsters entrapped in a wheel. There will soon be a whole generation of people who lived their lives without ever being bored.I see two major problems with this trend. The decline of boredom undermines our ability to think. And if we don’t take the time to think, we can†™t question what we hear. Over time, our critical-thinking muscles begin to atrophy due to disuse. We move from one notification to the next and one Google hit to the other without pausing, understanding, and deliberating. (This, by the way, is exactly what Silicon Valley wants: We’re not supposed to think. We’re supposed to hit “Buy now, with one click.”).Without a public unwilling to question - really question - what they hear, democracy decays and misinformation spreads. The reality comes close to the dystopian fiction depicted in Fahrenheit 451 where front porches are eliminated for their undesirable side effects:“My uncle says there used to be front porches. And people sat there sometimes at night, talking when they wanted to talk, rocking, and not talking when they didn’t want to talk. Sometimes they just sat there and thought about things, turned things over.  â€¦ [But t]hey didn’t want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking; that was the wr ong kind of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think. So they ran off with the porches.”Another casualty of a world without porches is creativity. There’s a saying that I love: “It’s the silence between the notes that makes the music.” It’s the silence, generated by boredom, that spurs innovation and catalyzes creative thinking. Even when it appears to be idling, the brain is still active. As you get bored, your subconscious kicks in and begins forming new connections. This is why the best ideas come to you in the shower. This is why numerous creatives and entrepreneurs credit boredom for their success. “Ideas come from daydreaming,” the author Neil Gaiman explains. “They come from drifting, that moment when you’re just sitting there.” When people ask Gaiman for advice on how to be a writer, his answer is simple: “Get bored.”Stephen King agrees. He believes that “boredom can be a very good thing for someone in a creative jam.” It wa s during a boring train ride that the idea for Harry Potter “simply fell into” J.K. Rowling’s head. The Hobbit was also borne out of boredom. As Professor Tolkien was grading, bored out of his mind, he scribbled on one exam paper, for no apparent reason, the following sentence: “In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit.” That’s how the opening line to The Hobbit was conceived.Other examples abound. Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, had a chair in his living room dedicated to daydreaming. Albert Einstein believed that “the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge.” In yet another memorable quote, George Bernard Shaw said, “Few people think more than two or three times a year. I’ve made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week.”Following in the footsteps of these masterminds, I decided to rekindle my long-lost affair with boredom. I began deliberately building time into my day that I would call “airplane mode” when I sit on my recliner doing nothing but thinking and daydreaming. I spend 20 minutes, four days a week, in the sauna, with nothing but a pen and paper in hand. Odd place for writing? Yes. But some of the best ideas in recent memory occurred to me in that solitary, stifling environment. The next time you feel boredom arising, resist the temptation to take a hit of data. Instead do what you did as a six-year-old: Embrace boredom and begin daydreaming. The results will surprise you.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.  Click here  to download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook: 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Exercising for just 10 minutes a day could help prevent disability later

Exercising for just 10 minutes a day could help prevent disability later Exercising for just 10 minutes a day could help prevent disability later A new study conducted by researchers at Northwestern Medicine published Monday in the American Journal For Preventive Medicine advances a theory that champions one hour a week of brisk to vigorous physical activity is linked to a significant risk decrease for disability later in life.“Even though it’s well known physical activity can help prevent disability, for many people, they’re just inactive, and it’s daunting to get started,” Dorothy Dunlop, the lead author of the study, told USA Today.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Just 10 minutes a dayThe study began with more than 1,500 participants between the ages of 49 and 83 from the multi-site study on knee osteoarthritis, known as the Osteoarthritis Initiative. The individuals utilized in the study all experienced pain in their lower-extremity joints such as their hips, knees, and ankles. The researchers required th e participants to wear accelerators so that they could measure their physical activity. These individuals were then followed up over the course of four years. The results yielded a 86% risk decrease for those that committed to just 56 minutes of intense to mild exercise a week, which amounts to a little more than 10 minutes a day.The study states, “Minimal thresholds of 56 and 55 moderate-vigorous minutes/week best predicted disability-free status over four years from mobility and activities of daily living disabilities, respectively, across the candidate measures. Thresholds were consistent across sex, BMI, age, and knee osteoarthritis presence.”Now the more active you are the more subtotal the benefits, but Dunlop believes starting a 10 minutes a day of moderate exercise can help individuals with predictors for disability hold on to their faculties and independence for much longer than they would have otherwise. For healthy adults that exhibit osteoarthritis symptoms or express pain in their lower extremity joints, the CDC recommends getting 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Military Enlisted Job Options

Military Enlisted Job Options Military Enlisted Job Options There are more than 800 different types of jobs available in the various branches of the United States Armed Forces. There are three ways to say the word job in the military.  The enlisted jobs in the Army and Marine Corps are known as military occupational specialties or MOS. Enlisted jobs in the Air Force are categorized as Air Force specialty codes (AFSCs) and enlisted jobs in the Navy and Coast Guard are referred to as rates or ratings. How Enlisted Jobs Are Assigned The duties of a particular enlisted job, where you will train and  live, how will you qualify, in what capacity will you deploy are all issues you need to consider when selecting a military job.   You also need to know the academic requirements you must achieve on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). This series of tests lets you and the military know where your strengths are, and for which jobs you are best suited. There may also be extended fitness requirements for a job you are seeking (Special Ops, Rescue Swimmer, etc).  You may also need a  security clearance from the Department of Defense, or U.S. citizenship in order to be selected for some jobs in the military. The comprehensive military enlisted job lists below will provide you basic details of the jobs available and the requirements to obtain them. Army Enlisted Jobs The Army is the largest branch of the U.S. military and as such has the biggest selection of jobs. Each military occupational specialty (MOS) has its own required ASVAB score and some have additional qualification factors. Air Force Enlisted Jobs The Air Force divides their AFSCs (enlisted jobs) into the following overall categories: Operations, Maintenance Logistics, Support, Medical Dental, Legal Chaplain, Finance Contracting, and Special Investigations. Navy Enlisted Jobs Similar ratings in the Navy are placed into various Naval Enlistment Classifications (NEC) or communities.  For example, ratings that are administrative in nature, are placed in the Administration Community. Ratings that deal with aircraft are placed in the Aviation Community.  The related links are to the various Navy enlisted communities.   Marine Corps Enlisted Jobs The Marine Corps groups its military occupational specialties with similar functions together into groups called Occupational Fields, which are represented by the first two digits of the MOS.  The first two digits of the MOS grouping identify related jobs (so infantry jobs would have similar looking MOS codes, for example). Job codes are identified in the last two digits and represent a specific job within that field.  The first job you receive in the Marine Corps will be earned after boot camp and may involve advanced operator training and education.  This will be called the Primary Marine Occupational Specialty (PMOS). Coast Guard Enlisted Jobs The Coast Guard Ratings consists of similar jobs as the Navy with a focus on shipboard maintenance and operation as well as aviation repair and maintenance.  Other physical ratings such as Coast Guard diver and rescue swimmer are similar in fashion to the Navy jobs. However, the Coast Guard are the police officers of the sea and have legal jurisdiction and arrest authority when confronting criminal activity.

Serial killers tend to work one of these 12 jobs before their murder sprees

Serial killers tend to work one of these 12 jobs before their murder sprees Serial killers tend to work one of these 12 jobs before their murder sprees If the rapid success of Netflix’s Making A Murderer  proves anything, it’s that Americans love a good murder story. Occasionally, serial killers are  confusingly underwhelming, but oftentimes they’re eerily prophetic, like John Wayne Gacy working as a party clown for small children or Rodney Acala winning a dating game show just before embarking on his tour of horror.More recently, we can look to the focus point of the latest Zac Efron film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, that centers on a young Ted Bundy moonlighting as a suicide hotline operator. That’s right. Serial killer Bundy, while still studying psychology at The Univerity of Washington, was employed by Seattle’s Suicide Hotline Crisis Center.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!An archived interview with the infamous serial killer, while on death row, suggests this particular occupation might have been just another of many vehicles fueled by his intense fascination with obscene and morbid material.  In the 1989 footage, the interviewer tries his best to get Bundy to intellectualize the root of this love affair with evil â€" to no avail.“I was essentially a normal person, I had good friends, I lead a normal life, except for this one small but very potent and very destructive segment of it,” Bundy explained matter-of-factly.In this instance, Bundy’s early occupation potentially funded sadistic interests, though a common variant on this kind of career antecedent is the one wherein the vocations occupied by future serial killers ends up contributing to their horrific crimes in one way or another.  Take, as an example, the way Jack The Ripper’s proposed life as a surgeon gave way to victims uniquely horrific and dismembered. The link that joins the skillset and methods of histories most reviled killers is explored intimately  in a new book, by  Michael Arntfield, called  M urder in Plain English.A closer look reveals more questionsArntfield compartmentalizes the jobs that seem to pop up with the most frequency in his review of 50 years worth of famous  serial killer cases. He breaks them down as follows: Top three skilled serial killer occupations, top three semi-skilled serial killer occupations, top three unskilled serial killer occupations, and top three professional/government serial killer occupation.Top three skilled serial killer occupations1. Aircraft machinist/assembler2. Shoemaker/repair person3. Automobile upholstererTop three semi-skilled serial killer occupations1. Forestry worker/arborist2. Truck driver3. Warehouse managerTop three unskilled serial killer occupations1. General laborer (mover, landscaper, et. al.)2. Hotel porter3. Gas station attendantTop three professional/government serial killer occupation1. Police/security official2. Military personnel3. Religious officialSeveral factors stood out to  Arntfield about the bulk of these professions, namely that accessibility to these jobs is currently pretty obsolete. Many killers adopted these professions in order to gain access to a larger pool of rotating victims, obtain otherwise unavailable information, and exercise specific and twisted fantasies â€" all features made more readily available via the internet.Ultimately, even Arntfeild concludes that individuals capable of the kind of acts that earned them infamy are rarely susceptible to the same trail of logic that stifles you and me.  An interview with an imprisoned Jeffrey Dahmer, mirrors the one of Bundy cited just above. Both of these have clearly toiled over countless hours, reveling and analyzing every thought and action that beguiled them to the other side â€" yet the best they have to offer is half-remembered impulses and illusions to exposure pornographic images. Or, as Arntfield illustrates more succinctly:“While many killers use their employment as a pretext to acquire vulnerable victims, obtain information, or cultivate violent fantasies for reasons we still don’t fully understand (“Milwaukee Cannibal” Jeffrey Dahmer once admitted that his work as a chocolate factory machinist awakened homicidal and necrophilic urges he had otherwise suppressed), in McArthur’s case, occupation was the back end to his alleged crimes, not the inspiration for them.”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

ASME Workshop and Congressional Briefing Explores Technology D...

ASME Workshop and Congressional Briefing Explores Technology D... ASME Workshop and Congressional Briefing Explores Technology D... ASME Workshop and Briefing Explores Technology Development Goals for Advanced Gas Turbines Nov. 20, 2017 ASME President-Nominee Said Jahanmir (at podium) introduces the panelists at the ASME Congressional Briefing Realizing Gas Turbine Performance Goals through Advanced Manufacturing in October. Participating in the briefing were (left to right) Mike Aller of the Consortium for Advanced Production and Engineering of Gas Turbines and Rotating Machinery (CAPE); Tim Lieuwen of Georgia Institute of Technology; Thomas Prete from Pratt Guy Deleonardo from GE; Douglas Rawlins of Solar Turbines; and Karen Thole from Pennsylvania State University. Photos by Paul Cleri, Technology Advancement and Business Development. ASME recently convened a workshop and congressional briefing in Washington, D.C., on Realizing Gas Turbine Performance Goals through Advanced Manufacturing. The events explored technology development in gas turbine industrial sectors and how public-private partnerships like Manufacturing USA are enabling manufacturers to create jobs and achieve technology goals, all while supporting overall U.S. public policy priorities in energy, transportation, and national security. Gas turbines are a key platform technology that support a wide variety of strategic applications and industry sectors, including aviation (commercial and military), oil and gas production and distribution, and power generation. Recent years have seen a decline in cross-cutting Federal investments in gas turbine RD while other countries have invested heavily in accelerating the development of advanced gas turbine technologies for generating power, propulsion, and a range of industrial processes. ASMEs two-day event, held Oct. 17 and 18 at the Rayburn House Office Building, brought together leaders from a wide variety of industrial sectors and related organizations, including the Gas Turbine Association, the Consortium for Advanced Production and Engineering of Gas Turbines and Rotating Machinery (CAPE), the Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Air Force Research Laboratory, and other leaders in research organizations across industry and academia. The House Manufacturing Caucus, led by U.S. Representatives Tom Reed (R-NY) and Tim Ryan (D-OH), and the House Natural Gas Caucus, chaired by U.S. Representatives Glenn G.T. Thompson (R-PA), Gene Green (D-TX), Tom Reed (R-NY) and Jim Costa (D-CA), also provided support in sponsoring the briefing. (Left to right) ASME Fellow Karen Thole of Penn State, ASME Fellow Tim Lieuwen of Georgia Tech, ASME member Richard Dennis of the Department of Energy and ASME member Mike Aller of CAPE were the ASME volunteer organizers for the Realizing Gas Turbine Performance Goals through Advanced Manufacturing Congressional Workshop and Briefing. The opening keynote featured Brett Lambert, formerly Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manufacturing and Industrial Base Policy and now vice president of corporate strategy for Northrop Grumman, who discussed his experiences at the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to establish the first National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (now Manufacturing USA) site. Lambert discussed how public-private collaboration on advanced manufacturing technical challenges results not only in new technical capabilities that can be shared across industry, but also as a critical resource development point for human capital in advanced manufacturing. The workshop also featured technical sessions on readiness levels of advanced manufacturing for turbines, technical presentations on certification, user acceptance, turbine component and system improvements, and a session to discuss roadmapping technology development in advanced gas turbines. The event closed with a briefing for congressional staff and other public policy makers which highlighted the scope of the economic impact of gas turbines technologies, the challenges facing industry today, as well as the public policies necessary to ensure U.S. leadership in advanced gas turbine technologies. How much more the top 1% earn than the bottom 99% in each state

How much more the top 1% earn than the bottom 99% in each state How much more the top 1% earn than the bottom 99% in each state Why is there so much wealth inequality? Economists have been trying to answer that question for decades, and one interesting way to think about the problem has to do with geography. Our new visualization highlights the yawning gap between the top 1% of earners and the bottom 99% for every state in the country. We gathered the numbers for our visualization from the  Economic Policy Institute (EPI), a nonpartisan think tank devoted to informing fiscal policy discussions. We plotted the average annual income for the top 1% of wage earners in each state. Then we added the average income for the bottom 99%, essentially dividing the entire workforce into two groups. The gray bar on our visual therefore the size of the gap between the highest earners and everybody else, letting you quickly and easily see the extent of income inequality across the US.Indeed, the gap is quite staggering. Across all 50 states plus Washington DC, the average difference is $1,047,435, a factor of 21.4 times. The states with the worst problems should come as no surprise: Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts have well-documented wealth inequality problems. One notable state at the top of the chart is Wyoming. We previously used EPI data to single out  Jackson Hole  as the most unequal location in the entire country, no doubt due to its status as a retirement destination for the uber rich. There’s another interesting trend lying just below the surface of our visualization. Take a look at the states with the lowest wealth inequality, toward the bottom of the visual. West Virginia, Mississippi, Maine, Kentucky and Alabama have the smallest gaps between the wealthiest 1% and everyone else. But these same states are widely known for their  rural poverty  and poor overall  public health. In fact, the bottom 99% earn some of the lowest wages anywhere in the country. The states with the lowest wealth inequality are also the poorest states in the country, which suggests one of two things. Either a rising tide lifts all boats, meaning the wages of the extremely well-paid inflates what everyone else makes too. Or states like West Virginia, where the average annual income for 99% of the population is a paltry $34,987, have economies that depress the wages of the top 1% too. Regardless of how we think about the correlation, moving across state lines to earn a higher wage seems like a plausible answer, even if  fewer Americans  are willing to move for jobs.Let’s add one more layer of complexity. Our visual says nothing about the cost of living.
